With Memorial Day around the corner, it won’t be long before all the pools are open! If you swim a lot during the summer, especially in chlorine, you may have noticed your hair doesn’t feel as good as it did in the fall/winter months. Here are some quick tips to help protect your hair from the damaging effects of the sun and chlorine so that you can enjoy the pool this summer care-free!

  1. R I N S E : Saturating your hair in water fills the hair cuticle, making it harder for chlorine, salt, and other damaging chemicals to absorb. Take advantage of the rinse stations at your local pool or beach before jumping into the water, or saturate your hair at home.
  2. R E S T O R E : Coat your hair in a light layer of leave-in conditioner to create a barrier against chlorine. You can also use a hair mask like Amika’s Soulfood Mask or Wellness Premium Products Deep Conditioning Mask, both sold here at GLOW!
  3. R E A P P L Y : Just like it’s important to reapply sunscreen to your skin, you should be reapplying moisture to your hair. You can use the same leave-in conditioner, or try Eufora’s Aloe Therapy Spray for a quick, convenient way to hydrate your hair that also helps to soothe a sun burn!
  4. S T Y L E : Doing all of that to protect your hair isn’t going to be as effective if you don’t properly style your hair too. Wearing a bun at the top of your head isn’t ideal because it can cause tension at the root of your hair, and ponytails can also put a strain on your hair. The best way to protect your hair before a day in the water is to braid it after applying your leave-in.

If you stick to these easy steps your hair is sure survive the summer! So next time you’re in the studio look for one of the products below to help protect those locks and keep that GLOW!
